Listed building flats plan refused

Croydon Council has rejected plans to demolish part of a listed building in the town centre.  The proposals were for 91-95 Church Street and were submitted by PD Planning UK Ltd on behalf of Patems properties. The company wanted to knock down existing rear extensions at the three buildings to make way for a two-four storey block of nine flats. The flats would have been made up of a studio flat, six one-bed flats and two two-bed flats. Shops in the current buildings, across the road from the Church Street tram stop, are an internet cafe and a beauty salon. A statement on the plans said: “The applicant considers that there will be no harm caused by this development, particularly when considered against the significant benefits of the provision of new housing and the enhanced retail provision and shop fronts.” It added that the frontage of the shops would be improved and made wheelchair accessible. But on Wednesday (September 19) the council refused the plans. A statement from the council’s planning department said: “The proposal would result in significant harm to a Grade II Listed Building with no resulting public benefit demonstrated by the applicant.” Agent for the applicant Warren Pierson said he expects another application for the site will be submitted. He said: “We will be seeing that we can do to overcome the council’s reasons for refusal. “It is likely that we will put in a revised application.”
